Badtech.org has moved to Cloudflare
Badtech.org has moved from a self-hosted Ghost installation to a static website built with Hugo and delivered through Cloudflare Workers.
The previous site ran on a VPS with Ghost, a database, and the supporting services needed to keep a public CMS online. That worked well, but it also meant maintaining another internet-facing application, managing updates, and monitoring for vulnerabilities.
Recent security disclosures across the web, including critical PHP vulnerabilities, reinforced the value of reducing unnecessary exposure. Badtech.org wasn’t running currently running PHP but has in the past, and those issues didn’t directly affect Ghost. Still, the broader state of web application security made it a good time to reconsider what infrastructure this site actually needed.
The new architecture serves prebuilt HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, without a public CMS or application database. Articles are maintained in GitHub and deployed automatically to Cloudflare.
The migration was also a worthwhile technical exercise. It involved preserving existing article URLs, migrating content, configuring redirects and security headers, building automated tests, and validating the deployment against Cloudflare’s edge infrastructure.
Static hosting doesn’t eliminate every security risk, but it removes several moving parts that a small publication doesn’t need.
